Yoga Nidras vs Liberation Lullabies

THE FOUNDER

Few people realize that the Swami Satyananda (picture below) is the originator of Yoga Nidra. He formulated the basis of this technique while serving as a disciple of his guru, the great yoga master Swami Sivananda, in Rishikesh, India during the 1940s and early 1950s.

Swami Satyananda describes how, as a young student, he fell asleep while a nearby group of people chanted mantras – many of which he had not heard before. Even though he was deeply asleep during the chanting, when he awoke and heard these mantras again, he seemed to know them. A yogi explained to Swami Satyananda that his subtle body had heard the mantras.

THE SCIENCE OF YOGA NIDRA

The scientific definition of relaxation states; you must remain aware in the process of whatever you are doing to relax.  Which makes yoga nidra the perfect hack for “true relaxation.”  Science has proven that the typical sensory activities that the masses are habitually engaging in to “relax”... (chilling on the couch watchin netflix, reading the newspaper, scrolling social media, drinking wine, and having a cigarette or joint will never suffice as a way to arrive at “true relaxation.”


SENSORY DEPRIVATION

The fifth limb of yoga is known as Pratyahara or the Control of the Senses. Yoga Nidra and Floating in Sensory deprivation tanks are both great examples of Pratyahara. When we take the time to go inward without any sort of outer stimulus, the nervous system begins to smooth those rough outer edges. Hack: Don’t forget to wear an eye mask for mid-day yoga nidras! The less stimulus the better!


THE BIRTH OF YOGA NIDRA

When Swami Satyananda was living with his guru Swami Sivananda in Rishikesh, India, he was asked to remain awake all night to guard the little boys at a vedic chanting school.  Satyananda had never once been awake to hear the boys chanting.  Then one day he was at a large function where the mantras were being sung, and he realized that he knew every word of the mantras!  He was delighted to discover that his subtle body had learned chants that had been recited each morning while he was in a deep sleeping pattern.  Because of this experience he realized that he could gain direct knowledge without any sensory medium. Our cells and brain are always listening!

CAN’T FAKE THA FREQUENCY

Our frequency is our truest currency.  It is up to us to know how we are vibrating out in the world.  As we develop, we learn when it is time to share our vibe with our tribe, and when it’s time to go inward.  Taking a quick trip into our Theta Brain Wave Frequency can be a huge game changer! BEST SLEEP HACK

Every night when we go to sleep we move from Alpha to Delta. One day one of my teachers asked me why would I just go from Alpha to Delta and have shallow sleeping, when I could visit theta first and completely reset my nervous system and have a deeper more restful sleep? Yoga Nidra completely changed my life and is a daily practice for me.  Practicing Yoga Nidra made me understand how powerful my brains is!

USE SANKALPA POWER IN YOUR LIBERATION LULLABY

 A sankalpa is a concise statement formed by the heart and mind. It is a solemn vow, a determination, or willpower, that is used within Yoga Nidras and Meditations. It is a tool meant to harness the will and to focus and harmonize the mind and body.  In most Yoga Nidras you will be guided to repeat your sankalpa 3 times at the beginning and the end. You will soon discover the power of your mind by repeating a sankalpa statement. A great sankalpa will propel you beyond old limited thought forms.

EXAMPLE STORY

Let’s say Tom is my client.  Tom is a wise & active member of his community that loves to work hard and care for others. He is in a relationship that isn’t the best fit. He has low self esteem due to unresolved childhood issues.  People tell him he is beautiful inside and out all the time but he doesn’t believe it. He is also afraid to speak his needs, and often puts himself last. Then, his health takes a nose-dive and he becomes too sick to work or make a livelihood.  He loses his home and his relationship ends. Currently he has no way to make money to eat or take care of himself.

TOM’S SANKALPA 

 “I am experiencing vitality, balance, and awesome mental & physical health everyday.” 

Notice that there is nothing negative in his Sankalpa. 


It is...

In the present tense  

It is...

Direct: It should roll off the tongue.
Not too long.

It is...

Positive

Also, notice that the Sankalpa is not about “making money.”   A wise active member of society will always be able to make money if they have their health. The sankalpa is also NOT about his core childhood wounding, because making a livelihood to feed himself is of the utmost importance at current.  Tom’s most important challenge is his health, so that is what his first Sankalpa for his Yoga Nidra will be.

Remember Sankalpas are powerful seeds that you are imprinting into your brain and every cell of your being!  Whatever your Sankalpa is will come true! So choose wisely!

Stick with the same Sankalpa until it comes true!

STEPS TO FINDING YOUR SANKALPA

Step One:
Write a list of your top 5 strengths.

Step Two:
Write a list of your top 5 Challenges.

Step Three:
Journal into your biggest Healing/Growing Edges. What are you ready and needing to heal?

Step Four:
Read steps 1-3 aloud to a dear friend. As you read your challenges and growth and healing edges aloud, notice which things seem to weigh in more heavily. Pick the 3 things that stood out the most.

Step Five:
Take the 3 main points and begin to write out statements in which you flip the script.

Example: If I want to focus on being more authentic I would write.

I am now experiencing my true nature
or
I embody deep focus and peace

Step Six:
Keep trying these statements on
until one of them feels right
in every part of your being.
You will know.
